HOW IT STARTED
The Beginning

The story begins like any tale as old as time — or, more accurately, like any cheesy Wattpad story. A strong, independent, girl-bossing lady known as Kirsten is thriving in Grade 10 before the pandemic decides to throw her life completely off course. Still, not even the world imploding on itself is going to stop her from achieving the goals she has set for herself. Her philosophy is simple: “Only degrees are meant to be caught, not feelings.” “No boys until university — they only slow your progress.”

The story begins like any tale as old as time — or, more accurately, like any cheesy Wattpad story. A strong, independent, girl-bossing lady known as Kirsten is thriving in Grade 10 before the pandemic decides to throw her life completely off course. Still, not even the world imploding on itself is going to stop her from achieving the goals she has set for herself. Her philosophy is simple: “Only degrees are meant to be caught, not feelings.” “No boys until university — they only slow your progress.”

That is, of course, the plan until Tristan enters the story. He is almost the exact opposite of our self-proclaimed protagonist. He lives in the moment, cares very little about what anyone thinks, and has absolutely no intention of allowing a woman to interfere with his financial plans or his flashy future. For lack of a better way to put it, this is your classic “bad boy meets teacher’s pet” trope.

Fast-forward to Grade 11, and the tall, dark and handsome groom finds himself in the same class as our chronically stressed, short bride. Tristan is popular, well-known among the ladies, and apparently the heartthrob of the grade — although poor Kirsten remains thoroughly unimpressed. Every class is disrupted. Every seat she wants somehow seems to be occupied. And for the longest time, her greatest contribution to Tristan’s life is simply providing another phone to play Among Us on.

That is until Tristan eventually asks: “Is all you do study, or are you actually going to hang out with us for one weekend?” Kirsten does not hear an invitation. She hears a challenge. Still, we are not allowing those two worlds to collide just yet. Instead, the idea of a date at Ocean Basket becomes the new side quest. Months pass, Grade 12 arrives, and all the avoiding, postponing and delaying eventually starts turning into frustration. Until the question finally comes up: “So… are we going to hang out or what?”

And that is how the iconic evening of 28 May 2021 came to be. Somewhere between a Platter-for-Two, a Coke each, and enough tension to be cut with a butter knife, a tiny spark finally caught flame. And then came a kiss. (We’ll leave it up to the reader to decide who was bold enough to make the first move.) That was the evening Tristan decided that, despite how much he claimed to dislike this stuck-up little teacher’s pet, maybe she was not so bad after all.

And Kirsten? Well, Tristan confidently taking off one of his Air Force 1s for the comfort of dropping down onto one knee rather effectively bulldozed every coherent thought she once had about “no boys allowed.” And, well the rest is history. Or, more accurately, the events leading up to you, the guest, somehow ending up invited to the wedding.
